Gracias a él existieron Úbeda, Córdoba y Málaga.

MOSMA IS DEAD

The forceful statement made public by David Doncel and Arturo Díez Boscovich, denouncing an attempt to appropriate a project created by others and naming Juan Antonio Vigar, director of MOSMA, as responsible, reveals either a failure to understand the new reality or an inability to communicate it properly.

The MOSMA festival, after ten years of existence, has disappeared. The current MOSMA Reloaded is not a continuation of the former festival nor an attempt to appropriate a project created by others. The model imported from Córdoba —and before that from Úbeda— consisted of concentrating concerts, talks, workshops, and various activities into a few days of intense programming. MOSMA Reloaded, by contrast, is limited to offering isolated concerts spread across many months, a format neither Doncel nor Boscovich invented. Moreover, the name MOSMA, as stated in Málaga Procultura’s brief response, legally belongs to the Málaga entity, which registered it in May 2009. Its use is entirely legitimate and cannot be ethically questioned. This is not comparable, for example, to the case of Francisco Ibáñez and the appropriation of Mort & Phil by the Bruguera publishing house: here there is no appropriation, but rather the replacement of one festival with another while keeping the brand.

The MOSMA festival, after ten years of existence, is dead. That is the reality that must be accepted and communicated without melodrama or accusations. As painful as it may be —and it is entirely understandable that it is— anyone in this field could see that the festival had been weakening for years, both due to budget cuts and a declining public response. It was, in effect, a foretold death.

Unlike what happened years ago with the Córdoba festival —where tensions between Doncel and the Provincial Council were evident—, that does not seem to have been the case here. The statement itself acknowledges that, faced with increasingly limited resources, the response from the Málaga Festival’s management:

Was not to move towards a professional framework, but instead to propose dismantling the festival format and replacing it with a series of isolated concerts held throughout the year. Furthermore, David Doncel was offered the opportunity to collaborate individually in occasional activities, while completely excluding Arturo Díez Boscovich and the team that had built the festival.

It is difficult to understand what “move towards a professional framework” means after ten years of the festival’s existence. Did such a framework not already exist? If it did not, and considering that all the entities within Málaga Procultura are clearly professional, what role were Doncel and his team playing? From that perspective, it makes sense that the organization would choose to dispense with Doncel’s team if their function was that of assistants rather than contracted professionals: the entities that make up Málaga Procultura already have their own staff for such tasks.

Furthermore, the statement makes clear that Vigar had already communicated the intention to dismantle the festival in order to introduce a new format which, I insist, cannot in any way be considered Doncel’s intellectual property. The fact that he was offered the chance to collaborate in this new stage shows that there was no intention to exclude him or to reproduce the traumatic rupture that occurred in Córdoba. Doncel’s decision to stand by Boscovich does him credit —others would have left him behind—, but in this new stage the work will be carried out with the principal conductors of the participating orchestras. What reason would there be not to count on them?

The statement claims that the true value of any project comes from the people who build it, and that is true: David Doncel has been, is, and will continue to be the most capable person I have known when it comes to creating projects of this magnitude. Thanks to him, Úbeda, Córdoba, and Málaga existed. I was —unofficially— declared persona non grata at MOSMA for refusing to cross certain red lines in the final days of Córdoba, and since then I have endured ten years of falsehoods and slander. The mildest of them was that I had attempted to take over the Córdoba festival, an infamy that some —despite knowing me— chose to believe, people I feel justified in calling profoundly foolish and no longer deserving of my consideration. I have always acted, with all my mistakes, from an unshakeable ethical stance, and with that same ethics —and an irrenounceable critical sense— MundoBSO covered several editions of MOSMA in an exemplary and impeccable manner. I have said it countless times: we are not for sale. In fact, I am banned from another festival for refusing (and I will always refuse) to participate in the exercise of flattery toward its director. It comes with the territory, and I accept it naturally.

I explain this —without truly explaining anything— because, despite everything that has happened (and which has not affected me in the slightest, since like Doncel I am also a beast and nonsense will never bring me down, nor will it bring down this incredible adventure that is MundoBSO), I want to publicly express my recognition of Doncel’s work, from the first day in Úbeda to today. He is an essential figure in our field, and I know that this third fall will not leave him on the ground: he will rise again to build another immense project. He will have my support and that of MundoBSO.

At the same time, I want to publicly express my recognition of Juan Antonio Vigar and the entire organization linked to the now-defunct MOSMA, because thanks to them, historic and sublime moments have taken place in our country related to what moves and inspires us. But naturally, and as anyone can understand, once the persona non grata status has been lifted, both I and MundoBSO will support and collaborate in whatever we are asked to do in the new MOSMA Reloaded. May it have a long life.
